5 FAST FITNESS FACTS  ABOUT OSTEOPOROSIS

Watch the video with La Crescenta personal trainer, Tracey Marashlian, and discover more about Osteoporosis in Five Fast Fitness Facts.

Osteoporosis is a disease where bone tissue deteriorates, leading to increased risk of fracture. It doesn’t just affect women. Men get it too.

Bone fractures from osteoporosis are more common than heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined.

You might think being skinny is great but being too light means bones don’t get the challenge they need to stay strong – basically, gravity isn’t pulling as hard as it does for heavier people and this can cause bone density problems.

Some drugs and medications increase your risk for this disease. This includes some breast cancer drugs, heart burn drugs and mood altering drugs.

Osteoporosis and Exercise

Exercise can treat and prevent bone density issues, but not all exercise is equal. Swimming and cycling don’t help much. Walking, hiking and tennis are good. The big winner is strength training using weights because it challenges the muscles and bones to make them stronger. A balanced exercise program based on a full assessment of your strengths and weaknesses is really the best option.
